*** This home is people friendly, and not pet friendly. ***
This delightful vacation home near Roche Harbor offers all the essentials to make your vacation memorable - a waterfront exposure, superb location, comfortable furnishings, wood-burning fireplace, communication and entertainment electronics - and a feel-good, unpretentious atmosphere that defines the classic Island lifestyle. This three bedroom (two queen beds and two twin beds) home faces south with a view across pristine Neil Bay, and features a great room with floor to ceiling windows that open onto a large bi-level deck. This is where you'll likely spend time catching the sun, enjoying morning coffee, dining on long summer evenings, and watching the eagle, geese, and other bird life explore the nearby salt-water lagoons.
This home is located in a desirable neighborhood on the NW side of San Juan Island, about a 20 minute drive from Friday Harbor and the ferry. You can walk to nearby Roche Harbor within 20 minutes, where you'll find an airstrip, kid's pool, post office, marina, market, artists kiosks, shops, and three restaurants.
If you plan to tour the islands by boat, you'll appreciate the convenience of tying it up to the 40 foot dock. But, do be aware that Neil Bay can go very shallow - tide charts must always be consulted before arrival and departures by private boat.
Please note this home has two steps to get to the entrance.

Like the last review from April I also didn't have a way to locate the dock when we arrived by boat. Fortunately we had another quest arriving by vehicle and she was able to go down to the dock and wave. The house was clean , comfortable, the bath towels were soft and fluffy and the BBQ worked.. The first thing we notice there was no coffee maker(listed) to be found. I sent an email to Northwest Island Escape asking where the coffee maker might be but never got a response. So we had to go out and buy one. Coming up from the dock carrying our belonging I noticed the metal apron from the bridge to the ramp had only one bolt holding it in place and this allowed the apron to move to one side where someones foot could slip threw causing serious injuries. So we had to always step over this problem. Also the hand rails on the bridge were loose and wobbly. The tops of the hand rails were covered with lichen like plant growth and the ramp on the dock was wrapped with a water hose and crab pot line. The handrail leading up to inside the living room from the deck was also loose and wobbly. I, being the oldest in our group, rely on stable and sturdy handrails. All of the wood chairs and table on the deck were also loose and wobbly. The fire pit was about to fall apart and we had to use the painted plastic chairs when sitting around it because these were at least somewhat stable. Apparently, one whole side of the firepit was missing screws. The carpet edge on the way to and from the back bedroom was sticking up and we tripped on it several times. We ended up turning the carpet around so the stuck up edge was out of a pathway. Two of our guest were working online and we couldn't find the wifi source. The listed "San Juan" was not found on wifi . We found a router and it's name was listed when we checked online but we didn't have the password. Again I emailed Northwest Island Escapes and again received no response. We finally found a password that worked but the DSL link was so weak no one could get online. Fortunately the two guest brought hotspots and Verizon and T-moble was accessible. Why no one changed the wifi instructions is beyond me. That monday was the Seahawks first game this year and the instructions to the TV, which we found near the wifi router, was all wrong. Luck shined on us again when one of us found an almost invisible switch behind the TV which turned the TV on and after some trial and error we got it to work. Our first meal also had issues while making breakfast I found only 2 frypans but they were so old, cracked and scratch non-stick, I would have thrown them out decades ago. The old 4 slice toaster only had a handle for one side so it was a 2 slice toaster. Even the paper towel were thin and cheap. Fortunately were brought cheap Costco paper towels to solve this. These issues are not rocket science, all that's required is a screw driver and a wrench to tighten all the loose furniture and handrails. Fixing the ramp apron requires a bolt and a nut. Wifi instruction should have been updated along with the TV instructions. Get some newer pans and toaster and have a coffee maker if it's listed.
We were excited to find a cabin with a dock, even though the cabin was bigger than what we actually needed. We've been to Roche Harbor before, but had not explored Davison Head and Neil Bay. This was a good way to be close to Roche Harbor while being removed enough to have privacy, peace and quiet. The cabin was spacious and clean, with great views of Neil Bay. It was fun to watch harbor seals from the cabin. We enjoyed the serenity of the location and going for walks around the area. Why 3 stars? 1. Finding the Dock. When we arrived by boat, the signage that identified the dock was not legible, so there was confusion as to whether it was the correct dock. We had to call Northwest Escapes to clarify the situation. NW Escapes said they would notify the owner that the sign needs to be re-painted. Also, the GPS coordinates for the dock that had been included in the house instructions were incorrect. 2. Neglected Landscaping. Walking up from the dock required carefully stepping over the last few steps, which were overgrown with grass and littered with large bird droppings. As we approached the cabin, we found a neglected landscape and deck area. There were multiple pots full of dead flowers, miscellaneous hoses strewn about, etc., and the deck furniture had not been straightened or swept, most likely since last summer. Since it was March we did not spend time on the deck, but it was unattractive to look at from inside the cabin and whenever we stepped outside. The outside areas should have been better maintained, especially for the price. As others have said, the lighting is problematic. There should be better lighting over the kitchen island and over the dining room table. Some good things we appreciated... the master bedroom (behind the kitchen) has a very comfortable bed. Also, the master bathroom is newly renovated, and the thick, fluffy towels were great. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need (good coffee!). The large, flat screen TV was beautiful (instructions need to specify the required use of two remotes). The Nest temperature control system worked very well. Overall, the cabin was spacious and comfortable for a relaxing few days in a beautiful setting. Thank you.
Lovely cabine, great for families. Great view of inlet where you can spot seals and birds in the morning. Plenty of games for rainy days, and everything you need to cook great meals.
This property was in a great location. We enjoyed the cozy house and view of frolicking seals in Neil Bay. The house was sparkling clean and the kitchen was well-stocked with the tools we needed to cook all of our meals.
Great place, clean and safe!
We enjoyed a relaxing stay at this house on Neil Bay in December. The house was in a great location and sparkling clean. The kids enjoyed watching seals frolic in the bay. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed to prepare all of our meals. The weather held up enough for us to explore most of the island and it was great to return to a warm, cozy house.
Stayed here with a small group of 5 friends and had a great time. The space is absolutely beautiful. Incredible deck, and a gorgeous setting. The fireplace is extra cozy and the layout is really great for groups! We'd highly recommend this place.
Great location with stunning view. Wood-burning fireplace adds cozy charm in cooler weather!
Our family (2 adults, 2 children under 10) had a FANTASTIC time at this home, and before we left the kids already begged us to make this an annual tradition. The house is very, very well stocked in the kitchen with loads of appliances, spices, pots, pans, tons of dishes, etc. The view from the dining table is amazing. The home was clean, the beds were comfortable. We loved how quiet and away from everything this location was, but it was only a short drive to Roche Harbor for supplies, or 20 minutes to any of the parks you might want to hike or visit. The other reviewers are spot on that the lighting in the home is a bit dark, but we just got out our flashlights for reading and thought of it as a cozy camping activity. I could stand on that patio and watch deer nibble at leaves all day long forever.
The house was amazing!! Loved the dock . both our 24 boats fit perfectly. House was well equipped had everything us guys needed. We will definitely be booking again next year for the 2021 Classic.
We had a wonderful stay at this home. We loved being right next to the water and enjoyed the beautiful views. There are also great touches to the house (ex. binoculars and crab pots to borrow!). I would suggest more lighting though since it definitely seemed dark even with all lights on. Also, there are only a few restaurants and one small grocery store in the area so keep that in mind as you are planning your meals.
The location of this house was awesome! Loved the views, the dock, the easy walk to Roche Harbor. We spent a lot of time in our kayaks and inflatable boat. We caught crab in Neil Bay. The water near the dock gets pretty shallow so a larger boat would probably not work. We loved the outdoor seating and the outdoor gas fireplace. There were 5 adults and plenty of room in the house. The interior is a bit older and could use some updating, but it was clean and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.
Exactly as described. Clean and simple beach house with nice dock in protected waters. Well stocked with all sorts of things you might forget. The house is a little dark inside and we were so busy it wasn't an issue.
nice layout for two couples and a child. Very convenient location. The views of the water and the tides were hypnotic. Lots of pots and pans and dishes. We liked the firepit best of all. great dock.We rented boat,,,,super convenient
My fishing buddies and I stayed at the Nile Bay property during the Black Miuth Salmon season for three days in February 2020. I arrived by boat as they have a 40 dock, and my friends drove... Great property! Well equipped. Dock bumpers need repair and shore power would be a big bonus... otherwise we all thought the property and location was excellent!
A doe and her fawn were resting next to the house when we drove up on our first day. Didn't budge an inch until we got our suitcases out of the card and started rolling toward the door. Their casual attitude told us we really on island time now! We saw deer almost daily, along with bald eagles and seals in the bay. The house was spotless when we arrived and had everything needed to make our stay relaxing and stress free. Beds and other furniture was very comfortable and the view of bay from the living area windows added to the relaxation. Most of our party of Texans had never seen tidal flows which raised/lowered the water level by 6 to 10 feet every day. Fascinating! The dock for the house always had good water, but lots of new sea life was revealed as the water came and went. In addition to other activities, while we were on the island we attended a wedding at the Roche Harbor Resort which was only minutes away. Overall, it was a great place to stay and we will check to see if it's available the next we're in the area.
My family really liked this rental property. The layout is nice and there is good outdoor space. In warm/hot weather the deck stays shady and cool. Lack of sun could be an issue for some. One of the steps to the dock needs to be repaired and there is not enough light in the kitchen. Other than that, it is a great place!
This was such a lovely home on Neil Bay. The views were terrific, the cabin had everything you could want to prepare meals and enjoy them inside or out. The rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean, well maintained and fully furnished with towels and guest toiletries. We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend stay.
The directions were perfect. The location was just as described. The house was lovely. Unforunately, the flowers were from the previous week. We threw out the dead flowers and made one bouquet. No flowers would have been better. When we went to go to bed we found one bed had been made with no top sheet. It was too late to call but when I called in the morning a sheet was delivered to the house.
I want to thank these guests for what is a generally positive review. Obviously, the flowers had been left for an occupancy that was anticipated prior to this guest visit. It should have been cleared and replaced or left with no perishable flowers. We are truly sorry you bed had not been made with a top sheet. I personally know how frustrating that can be. My apology. Please give us another chance to provide you with the perfect vacation rental on San Juan Island.

We have been here several times before. Same beautiful location. Same clean, well-appointed house. And you even provided the same exceptional weather.
Amazing! This is our favorite place to stay on San Juan Island. Being boat owners, we love the dock. My family had a wonderful time fishing and crabbing, and enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. We cant wait to come back next year!
WAS WORKING ON THE ISLAND AND NEEDED TO RENT A PROPERTY. SO GLAD I PICKED THIS ONE. IT WAS QUIET, SERENE AND PLENTY OF WILDLIFE. ALTHOUGH WE WORKED LONG DAYS IT WAS GREAT TO COME BACK TO A QUIET AND COMFY PLACE. INTERNET WAS SOOO SLOW OTHERWISE A+
Spent a wonderful week along a quiet, secluded salt water bay which allowed for casual kayaking, deck lounging and wildlife watching. Very convenient to Roaches Harbor and only a short drive into Friday Harbor. A very enjoyable spot for a family of 4 adults.
The location was fabulous. The home was well apponted however I think it would benefit from some editing and updating. Getting rid of old tired fake plants and other dated artwork and getting some new lamps, etc. would be nice to have a few lounge chairs to better enjoy relaxing outside.
This house was very clean and comfortable. The view was wonderful and serene. My kids loved climbing down the steps of the dock and walking around by the water every morning while the tide was out. However, I have two complaints: one, the mattress in the master bedroom should be replaced. It's time. Every time you get out of bed or roll over, the old springs make a horrible noise. I mean, it is LOUD. A peaceful night's rest for the amount of money we paid a night isn't too much to ask. The second complaint - upkeep outside. There were dead potted plants and various yard art scattered about the property. It was a little depressing, actually. Yes, the view is wonderful, the location is awesome -- but again, for the money we paid a night -- a little upkeep would've gone a long way. That said, we had a lovely time. Would we stay there again? Probably not.
Dear Guest, thank you for choosing to visit the San Juan Islands and for your review here. We appreciate your feedback on the house. I have forwarded your comments to our San Juan Island Manager and we are in communication with the owners to address these concerns. We sincerely appreciate your visit and hope you will return again soon. Best Regards, General Manager
Everything was fine, except that the mattress
in the master bedroom really needs to be replaced. Also the toilet seat in the guest bathroom is very loose.
Awesome!
I took the time to write in the physical guestbook so will be shorter here. The house is located in an amazing part of the island if you like peace and quiet, which is what we were looking for. We traveled from California and obviously did not have a boat but, when not on the property, spent the entire time gazing at the water, changing wildlife, water aspects, light. The kitchen is very well equipped: the best we've ever had in many years of rentals. Most homeowners will throw in their chipped items for renters but this house had good-quality items (not top of line obviously but not chipped or mismatched). Not important to all but it is to us. This is an expensive rental in high season, so we very much appreciated that level of courtesy. The only "child" we brought was 18 years old and adored it. The main complaint was the bed in the master BR, hard as a rock and, weirdly, lets out a deafening "creak" only when the person on the left side gets up. We could nitpick (wish there were kayak/bikes along with the rental) but the rest is minor and cannot offset the wonderful time we had. Granted, we were outdoors and not interested/in need of indoor amenities. Would definitely go back!
