Cedar Sunrise is a modern house that speaks to nature lovers with an appreciation for art and design. Created by award-winning architect Geoff Prentiss, Cedar Sunrise highlights the island’s distinct natural beauty while offering a modern, yet exceedingly comfortable, design.
Upon arrival, wind down the lighted, wooden steps to the secluded home. Open the door and absorb the warmth of the custom millwork and vaulted native fir ceilings. Appreciate the mosaic of artfully-designed windows scattered playfully throughout—each like its own picture postcard with views from every room, bringing the outside in. Enjoy the cozy, covered seating area on the large deck; which offers stunning views of the nearby sea and is the perfect place to soak up the dark, starlit San Juan night sky.
Take your perch in the Eagle’s Nest—this unique, private, loft queen bedroom boasts cathedral windows that offer the sense of being, like the birds, deep within the trees themselves, peering out to the sea. Open the room’s side windows to peek at the deer, take in the sounds of the forest and listen to the waves lapping on the pebble beach below. The main floor king bedroom is just what it needs to be—quaint, intimate and surrounded by windows and trees.
On the main floor a well-appointed cook’s kitchen awaits. Fire up the Viking range to prepare fresh clam linguini from Buck Bay Shellfish and toss a salad with island-grown produce from the Maple Rock Farm Stand. Enjoy your feast in the spacious dining room or open up the French doors to eat al fresco with a view to the water. An outdoor grill is also available.
Spend your time curled up on the couch while you relax with a book or listen to your favorite music on the Sonos sound system. Wander down the path to relax on the hammock overlooking the water and take a rejuvenating nap. Or, head upstairs to the comfy loft for TV viewing with access to DirectTV or log into one of your streaming services. And if you need to work during your stay, you can count on reliable WIFI throughout.
Cedar Sunrise invites adventure by day and cozy nights year-round. Located just 20 minutes from the ferry landing by car and a leisurely 4-mile walk or bike ride into town, the quiet home feels private and remote, yet it’s incredibly convenient. Head to the charming village of Eastsound to peruse local shops and cafes or visit the food co-op or well stocked supermarket. Foodies delight in the island’s farmsteads and farm-to-table dining options like The Inn at Ship Bay and Matia. Seafood lovers swoon at the oyster shucking and crab cracking options at Buck Bay. And no trip to Orcas is complete without a stop at Brown Bear Bakery, offering the best chocolate croissants outside of France.
Up for fresh air and exercise? Take a day trip by bicycle or car through pastoral Crow Valley to Deer Harbor. Enjoy hiking Turtleback Mountain with amazing island vistas or try Moran State Park’s Summit trail to the top of Mt. Constitution (the last mile is sure to burn off those chocolate croissants). Pack a picnic and head to Moran’s Cascade Lake for a day of swimming and paddle-boarding. Guided kayaking treks and whale watching trips are also available through local outfitters.
However you choose to spend your time, savor each day at Cedar Sunrise—where nature, art and modern design combine for an incredible memory-making experience.

Cedar Sunrise is one of the nicest rentals on Orcas. Weve been renting on Orcas for almost 30 years and weve never seen a rental as will executed and well equipped. We love to cook and this house has the best kitchen and probably the nicest outdoor sitting and dining area of any rental. If you appreciate great design, impeccable craftsmanship, quality furnishings and a convenient location near town, this house is for you. A few things you should be aware of that may not be evident from the listing. While the house has a lovely water view, you cannot see or access the shoreline. The proximity to town means youre 2 miles from the Orcas airport and aircraft go directly overhead. On sunny summer days this can be quite a few as the airport averages better than 110 operations a day. A member of our family is a commercial pilot who loves small airplanes and even he was tired of the noise. Aircraft traffics slows in the evening and stops after dark. The bed upstairs is full-size so if you want the great view you need to deal with the smaller bed. The other factor is the bedroom upstairs does not have any window coverings and the summer sun shines directly onto the bed at a very early hour.
My wife and I had a lovely stay at this gorgeous well appointed house in the beautiful setting overlooking the bay south of Eastsound. We loved watching and listening to the birds from the deck. We loved everything about this home including the kitchen, bathrooms, and unique architectural design with so many windows taking advantage of the great views. We also used this home as a place from which to explore the entire island. We enjoyed the proximity to Eastsound as well as the ability to visit Turtleback Mountain Preserve, Moran Park, and all points on the island. I highly recommend this wonderful home!4/25/2021
We stayed at a cabin outside of Eastsound on Orcas Island. We really enjoyed our stay and the unique property. We spent a lot of time cooking, reading, and playing games. This was the perfect place to unplug and unwind. Our friends were jealous of all our great pictures.
Cedar Sunrise is a cozy, treasured retreat for art and nature lovers and an ideal basecamp for all the adventures of Orcas Island. You can't help but notice the windows everywhere you look! Each room in the cabin features these amazing wood-framed windows in unique configurations offering a glimpse into the intricacies of island life (from the feeding buck in the back yard and an artful evergreen out front to the secret hammock on the cliff overlooking the Sound). We biked, hiked and beachcombed by day and enjoyed fresh seafood, fine wine and cozying up at both the indoor and outdoor fireplaces by night. The owners have thought of everything, so felt very pampered and comfortable. So much so, we did NOT want to leave! Hope to come back soon and stay longer than a weekend!
A week of peace, poetry and music.
A lovely home and idyllic setting made for a great stay. Weve been visiting and renting on Orcas for 25 years and this house has to be one of the nicest and best equipped. The amazing design and integration into the site are first class and the attention to detail and quality is above all others.
The highlight of our stay had to be time spent on the covered deck in front of the outdoor fireplace wrapped up in the Pendleton blankets. Weve already booked another week later this year.
The only negative was the bed size.
Cedar Sunrise is a fantastic architectural cabin on Orcas, and booking with Northwest Island Escapes was a true delight. When an abnormally large amount of snow hit the island a few days before our planned arrival, the reservations team went above and beyond to communicate with us to work through any potential issues with reaching the property safely. In the end, we did indeed make it to the cabin, and we are so glad we did! It is completely private, and has spectacular views through the trees down to east sound. The property is very well stocked, and the Sonos sound-system was a nice bonus. This cabin is much more than your average vacation rental ---- if you appreciate design, youll love Cedar Sunrise.
